ROCKPORT — Pen Bay Medical Center is pleased to welcome Minal F.J. Cordeiro, MD, to the Pen Bay Orthopedics team. Dr. Cordeiro specializes in a procedure called anterior hip replacement. This is a minimally invasive total hip replacement that is done without cutting into the muscles and tendons surrounding the hip, allowing for a faster recovery time.

For patients who are good candidates for this type of hip replacement, there are additional benefits, according to PBMC, in a news release. Patients who have this kind of hip replacement do not have the same movement restrictions as those who have a traditional total hip replacement and typically experience less pain and faster return to everyday activities. Patients are usually up and walking around within a few hours after surgery.

Dr. Cordeiro will perform the procedure on a new Hana® Orthopedic Surgery Table, which the hospital recently acquired thanks to a generous donation from Laurie Lombard, who worked with the hospital’s philanthropy team to find a project that would make a significant difference to the hospital, help recruit and retain top-notch providers, improve patient surgical outcomes and increase access to care. His gift was made in honor of Dr. Tom Williams, a founding physician of PBMC with whom Lombard had a close connection.

Dr. Cordeiro is the first orthopedic surgeon to offer anterior hip replacement at PBMC, and is now seeing patients at Pen Bay Orthopedics.

“We are excited to be able to offer this procedure at Pen Bay Medical Center,” said Mark Eggena, MD, PhD, regional chief medical officer for MaineHealth’s coastal region. “Previously, patients seeking this type of hip replacement would have had to drive more than an hour. Now they can have the surgery close to home.”

Dr. Cordeiro earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Rosalind Franklin University’s Chicago Medical School in 2017. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Michigan State University/McLaren Flint in Flint, Michigan, and a fellowship at the Hip and Knee Institute at Cape Cod Orthopaedics in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Dr. Cordeiro also holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
