Josephine H. Curran, obituary

BRUNSWICK — Josephine H. Curran, 85, died Wednesday, November 8, 2023, with her twin sister Jackie at her side. Born in Milo, November 26, 1937, she was the daughter of William J. and Nellie R. Tompson Curran, the 10th of 11 children. Her twin, Jackie, was born an hour later November 27, 1937.

Educated in local schools, Jo was a 1956 graduate of Milo High School. From there, she took a two-year secretarial program at Husson College. After graduating in 1958, Jo moved to southern California with her sister Jackie, where for more than two years, both were employed as secretaries. Jo and Jackie returned to Maine and worked about three years, as secretaries at Shibles’ Hall (education building) at the University of Maine in Orono.

At the age of 29, Jo decided to go back to Husson for her bachelor’s degree in business education. Jo began her teaching career in 1970. She taught business subjects at Hermon High School, from 1970 to 1998. Jo enjoyed her teaching career in which she met many wonderful students, teachers and friends.

She loved golf, cribbage, watching tennis and being with family and friends. She enjoyed many wonderful vacations with sisters Betty, Mary and Jackie. She loved animals and had several cats over the years.

Jo was a member of Maine Retired Teachers’ Association, Knox County Retired Educators’ Association, Maine Association of Retirees and was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Rockland.

Other than her parents, Jo was predeceased by her siblings William Curran, Jr., Alice McDonough, Helen Martell, Hazel Curtin, Mary Fullerton, John Curran and Robert Curran.

She is survived by three sisters, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ardini, Patricia Perkins, and a very special and dear twin sister and friend, Jackie Curran; many nieces and nephews, including Susan Martell Cloutier, Ann Fullerton Spencer, Kathy Ardini Robinson, and Jennifer Curran; as well as a very dear friend and fellow teacher, Cheryl Shankel.

A Memorial Mass planned for the spring of 2024, to be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Rockland, will be announced.
